Malaysian cleric slams leader of Indian origin
The Asia News.Net Thursday 15th May, 2008 (IANS)
Malaysian Indian leader Karpal Singh's criticism of a member of the Malaysian royal family is tantamount to being disrespectful to Islam, Harussani Zakaria, the mufti (interpreter of Islamic jurisprudence) of Perak state, has said.
Zakaria said this was because the constitution had stated that the sultans, or rulers, and the king are the heads of Islamic affairs.
'DAP (Democratic Action Party) chairman Karpal Singh, in questioning the authority of the Sultan of Perak Azlan Shah, was disrespectful to the constitution. As a citizen of the country, Karpal had been disloyal to the rulers and hurt the feelings of the Malays,' Zakaria said.
Singh, 68, a prominent lawyer and opposition lawmaker, has denied being disrespectful to the sultan of Perak or questioning his constitutional position and privileges.
Singh said he had only criticised the sultan's move to block the transfer of a senior official in the state in charge of the religious affairs department, saying that the constitutional head should not engage in appointments and transfers.
Harussani said that although Singh had a right to talk about laws, the sultan had the power over religious matters and it was an issue sensitive to the Malays.
'The various ethnic groups in Malaysia live in peace and harmony and Singh's action would only anger the rakyat (polity),' he said.
The mufti's statement came even as two more cases were filed against Singh at different police stations, bringing the total to 20. Police recorded Singh's statement last week.
Malaysia's attorney general this week said the case against Singh is 'almost complete'.
Last week, Singh blamed Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his government of giving 'a purely legal issue a political twist' by getting many people to file cases against him.
He has also criticised Badawi for making a public statement stressing the urgency of moving the proceedings against Singh.

what about when UMNO was disrespectful to the Sultan. This are all double standards, and it will do the country no good. It is all done with a hidden agenda. Anyway god is watching no wonder many islamic countries are in a mess , look at Pakistan and India. They got independence together and yet India has outdone Pakistan. The richest Muslim in India has wealth more than the ten top richest Muslims in Pakistan combined. Malaysia was lucky because it controlled Islamic fundamentalism but if the bumi’s do not understand globalisation where the best will thrive then I am afraid this country is in for a big surprise in the future. There are no free rides in this world and dont be surprised if Vietnam will over take us just wait until the oil runs out. Then they will still blame the non bumis’s for their woes. konon nya to quote the mufti of Perak, The non bumi’s bully the bumi’s what a joke.

To Uno, I would like to say that everybody is for freedom of speech but it is not withought limitation. There is a parameter to everything and if you choose to cross the perimeter and, in this case touching on a provision in the Federal Constitution, then be prepared for the consequences.
To Malasyu and jepalay, if the Perak Mufti gives his views on the Karpal Singh fiasco that does’t mean that he is making it a religious issue. I don’t think he has in anyway connected the issue with the teaching of Islam. He gave his views as the religious head of Perak and what is provided in the Federal Constitution, and I think he is entitled to that.

Be patient, let the law take its cause, since police reports were made, let the police and court do their duty, the public will know when the court passes judgement, till then maintain and respect freedom of speech. Be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Go Karpal, we are right behind you , er, no not in that sense!
How this whole saga has been turned from being disrespectful to the Sultan to Islam?? Was the mufti asleep when the B Nutsional reps were being dispectful to the rulers of Perlis and Trengganu? Were they then not disrespectul to Islam then, by his logic? They even had banners calling the ruler 'anjing' and none had police reports made against them. Why?? B’cos they are from UMNO and yes UMNO Boleh!!
So, Karpal we the rakyat know that you merely made a point of law and did not mean to be disrepectul to the Sultan. I hope the others would know as well as this is all a BN spin to divert attention from more pressing issues.
Aaniyan rocks...and he votes!

What Silence
which century are you from. You mean to say that God is for the Muslims only. God is for everybody. He who believes in the creator believes in God. His creation must be fair to its sister creation, there is no bigger sin than the creation being unfair to the sister creation. Have humane ideals my friend because God protects the muslim and the non muslim alike. Dont behave with extreme ideas. The infidels are those who are not fair to Gods creation.

Hold on your horses
Whoa, hold on. Karpal can say anything he wants and that is democratic. The mufti can also say anything and that is democratic. About the police case, look at the bright side — Karpal doesn’t need to engage a lawyer. I just see democracy alive and thriving here. Maybe there is a difference of opinion — which is fine, as long as we can resolve it in a civilised way.

God? which god?
Psalm 94:20 (New International Version)
“Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— one that brings on misery by its decrees?"
God as nothing to do with the wicked,so please don’t even mention His Holy Name with your filthy mouth,no matter how great you are in the eyes of men here on earth!
You are nothing in the sight of God!

What KS said may or may not have been correct. But dear Mr cleric dont drag Islam into everytinig.

jepalay 05-15-08, 06:41 PM |
Yep!
AS usual religion has to get themselves into politics and try to control everything. This is what we have to endure when Malaysia does not believe in separation of Church and State.

Silence of Islam
Do not show disrespect to Islam. When the Mufti beats the drum let your heart submit to the divine sound of the almighty without questioning. Islam’s problem with the infidels is not new. Their freedom of speech is an imperialist invention. Muslims submit, infidels cahkap banyak.
