Beijing police boast of security record during Olympics
The Asia News.Net Wednesday 27th August, 2008 (IANS)
Beijing, Aug 27 (Xinhua) Crime figures in the Chinese capital during the Olympic days were at an eight-year low, thanks to the tight security measures, police said Wednesday.
The figures reported between Aug 8 and 24 were 'the lowest' compared with the same periods in the past eight years, they said.
The police declined to give figures, but said the number of serious cases such as murder, robbery and rape all fell.
A total of 482 suspects, including 40 foreigners, were arrested during the period for alleged involvement in robbery, mugging or theft.
But no such cases were reported in the Olympic venues like stadiums, media centres and designated hotels and hospitals, largely due to tight security checks and massive patrols in those areas.
About 35,000 policemen were on patrol duty daily during the Olympic Games.

No pain, no gain, there are tradeoffs in values
Wonder how this will work out in USA when Americans have the 'right to bear arms'? Attend at your own risk. One bloody Munich Olympics is bad enough. London should now be nervous about its 2012 Olympics given its July 2005 bombings and past bombings in that country. Its goal is not to outperform China in terms of gradeur, but to match it in terms of public safety and security for its citizens and for all the foreign dignitaries in attendence. Bobbies may need to resort to watercannons again. Better be prepared.
