Ibrahim vows to pull down government by Sep 16

The Asia News.Net
Wednesday 27th August, 2008 (IANS)

Malaysia's controversial opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who has won a parliamentary by-election, has vowed to bring down Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's government by mid-September.

His opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat (PR) would take over by Sep 16, The Star newspaper quoted the leader, who comes back to parliament after a decade, as saying.

Ibrahim has termed his election in the by-election Tuesday as Malaysia's 'second political tsunami', an allusion to the outcome of the March elections when the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) was for the first time denied a two-thirds majority.

The opposition leader, who has earlier threatened to bring down the government, said his victory brought new meaning to the word 'merdeka' (freedom).

Ibrahim, 63, promised that his opposition alliance that emerged strong with 82 members in parliament and control of five of the 13 states in the March polls would bring 'new hope to the people with its reform agenda'.

'We will stick to our promise that the price of fuel will be reduced when we form the government,' he told supporters after his win.

The speaker of the Malaysian parliament announced Wednesday that the new member from Permatang Pauh, a tiny constituency in Penang that witnessed a vigorous campaign, would be sworn in Thursday.

Ibrahim won by a resounding 15,671-vote majority, getting more votes than his main rival, BN's Arif Shah Omar Shah who only managed 15,524 votes.

Ibrahim's win was expected, media reports and commentators said Wednesday, despite his being slapped with a sodomy charge by a former aide -- a charge identical to the one he faced a decade back and which cost him his job as deputy prime minister and finance minister besides his seat in parliament.

Ibrahim remains under probe and has refused to take a DNA test.

With a bulk of the opposition busy with Ibrahim's election, the government Tuesday pushed a bill that aims at making DNA tests mandatory if the court requires it.

DPA adds: 'We won! And our victory is decisive and overwhelming,' Ibrahim said in his blog early Wednesday. 'And it's great to be back!'

He was the clear favourite to win in Tuesday's by-election. However, the astounding majority he obtained has stunned his detractors.

'Our calls for national unity, good governance and a vibrant democracy have silenced the voices of racist chanting, those who profit from the abuse of power and exploit the politics of fear and deceit,' he wrote.

'We have promised a New Dawn for Malaysia and we will deliver on our promise.'

Ibrahim held the Permatang Pauh seat from 1982 to 1999 when he was forced to quit after being ousted from the government and put on trial for corruption and sodomy.

He was convicted and imprisoned on both charges, which he denied, but was freed after Malaysia's top court overturned the sodomy conviction in 2004.

After he vacated the seat, his wife Wan Azizah Ismail represented the constituency from 1999 to 2008, before stepping down to make way for her husband.

'The people have rejected oppression and they are saying they do not want to be taken for granted any longer,' Ibrahim said to a gathering of tens of thousands of supporters late Tuesday after he was announced the winner. 'The people have sent a strong message to the government.'

Ibrahim vows to pull down government by Sep 16

PM needs to resign lah. It was total disaster for UMNO. If UMNO feels it can go alone then continue to raise religious and racial sentiments and the one race teaching. Forget about BN MCA, Gerakan, PPP and MIC. These BN component parties leaders did not really serve the rakyat and the results are evident. High time for change in the leadership of these BN component parties. They were all YES Ministers. Malaysia has grown, the people including the Malays are intelligent like any other race to understand what corruption and misdeeds are.

See the trend, Malaysian politician,

especially those from East Malaysia. This is the only chance for you to join the winning team or you will be late. The trend is clear, the tsunami of 308 is not stopping but increasing its influence in this by-election, another four years you can imagine how many more voters will cross over, you will be the loser to stay put in this kind of situation. Early birds get the worm.

There is nothing wrong with dream...The famous quote by Martin Luther King Jr..I HAVE A DREAM. Today the nation who have heard that speech in 1963 is now about to see the reality. The more raciest you are the more backward you became.

Best time to jump ship

MCA, MIC, Gerakan, make you move now! Do you want to belong to a racist regime with no voice for all Malaysians? With DNA and Sodomee in the news, ordinary Malaysians are not fooled!

UMNO FUTURE

Hope UMNO could understand. With the Result, Anwar is not the main factor they need to consider or look into. By passing the DNA-Bill and put him back to Jail, and shut his mouth. THis is shortsigned Leader. Remember every 5 years we have General Election, unless BN can remove away the Election.

If you non-malays think that the GOVERNMENT is going to be a HEAVEN under Anwar, you are wrong. LIFE in MALAYSIA will be HELL with ANWAR IBRAHIM. Don’t be fooled into thinking that PAKATAN is going to help you. Only BARISAN is the TRUE savior that will CHAMPION for the rights everyone regardless of RACE.

TO NEGARAKU

BN is a good party, but the Leader is driving without a ' G.P.S ' or at least a ' Road Map '. We need to get someone know how to read Map or operate GPS.

We cherish both of them, we discipline them too.

BN or BA, they are all anak Malaysia. When one has gone overboard we the citizen have the responsibility to tell them so, by our vote. Nobody is saying anyone of them are perfect. No one will. Is better to have two kids, two suppliers, two girl friends, then they cannot tarik harga all the time.

Is there a place for Malaysians?

Firstly to NegaraKu, the only reason we are still here or rather, return home to Malaysia, is because we are Malaysian. If this gets ridiculous, we will leave. Further, you are wrong to presume we don’t know any better with regards Anwar.

My blog on this: http://ourtable.wordpress.com/

Secondly, Anwar should not be allowed to go any further unless he can explain himself to all Malaysians, not just the electorate at Permatang Pauh.

Finally, if its the devil or the deep blue sea. I choose the devil because I know how it operates. In other words, Badawi/BN is the best of the worst choices we have currently available. PKR is not even close because they don’t any experience, nor judgement.

DOLLAH PASSING BATON TO NAJIB !

WOW, ONE PM TO ANOTHER 'NEW PM' IN 2 YEARS?.

BOTH OF THEM DECIDED AMONGST THEMSELVES WITHOUT THE CONSENT AND APPROVAL OF THEIR UMNO MEMBERS.

HOW DID THEY DO IT?

SIMPLE, GIVE THEM SOME 'GOVT. COTNRACTS' AND THEY SHUT THEIR MOUTHS AND TALK NOTHING. OLD TRICK LEARNED FROM THEIR SIFU, PM MAHATIR.

CONSENT BY BN COMPONENTS PARTIES?
NO NEED AS UMNO DECIDES ALL FOR PAST 50/45 YEARS. SAME TRICK. GIVE THEM SOME MINISTER POSTS AND THEY WILL SHUT UP TOO. WOW, SO EASY TO SELL OUT THEIR OWN PARTIES YA.

NOW UMNO WANT TO 'GO ALONE' AND CLOSE DOWN BN. AS SUCH, THEIR 'OLD PARTNERS' MAY HAVE TO LOOK FOR NEW JOBS VERY SOON.

GREAT WORK, DOLLAH AND NAJIB.

ALL THE BEST TO YOU,

Outdated Govt. Policies

Barisan ideas has outlived it’s time. The divisive policies along racial lines with UMNO, MCA, MIC and Gerakan have lots it’s attraction to the nation. We want a Malaysian Malaysia who will benefit all and champion for all creed and religion. Anwar realise it and has change with time. Barisan is still in the stone age.

Well done Anwar and congrats. To the voters of PP, you have voted very wisely and thank you.

dear malaysian’s lets we all think like one nation and one people i beleive its not the matter of who rule but who bring the change to the nation and economy. Current economy status is not convincing and the inflation has raised to 8.5% which does not correspond to the pay.People are paid low salary but the prices of the goods are increasing. So i think who ever can solve this problem of people should be supported and encouraged. Please wake up and dont think its malays and non malays issue but its overall malaysian people issue.

Bad or Good ?

Nothing in this world is perfect. Neither human nor thing. The solely and graciously perfectionist is the AlMighty God that created human and this world for the purpose of one to worship HIM forever until diminishing time determined by thy LORD. So are we Malaysians win or lose in this world is just a test from several tests that we are facing in each second in our life. Neither Malays nor Non Malays could live happily in this country without tolerance and co-operation between each other. Just look at other countries outside, are we want to become like them. Thus please for the sake of our future generation we work together as one team either your ideology is BN profound or BA esteem we are just the same human with the same blood colour inhaling the same air under the same roof. Think and Accept. Best regards to all Malaysians out there. Happy Celebrating Merdeka.

Don't you ever learn BN?

Really, can someone remind the BN again that Malaysians are now more educated and are able to think and will make educate votes.

What happened in PP is another reminder to BN. Unless the BN representatives become less arrogant, listen to the people and listen hard, stop all the racist remarks and remember that Malaysia is for all Malaysians, your days will be numbered!
