British troops in grave danger in Afghanistan

The Asia News.Net
Wednesday 27th August, 2008

Afghanistan is now more dangerous for British troops than Iraq has ever been, a new report has revealed.

It shows eight out of every 1,000 UK servicemen are being killed in NATO's mission to tame the Taliban in the Afghan badlands.

That is more than the coalition death rate of 7.5 per 1,000 personnel during the worst of the fighting in Iraq.

In newly pacified Baghdad and Basra, the rate is now down to less than three per 1,000, The Sun reported.

Statistics revealed by the Medical Research Council also show that for the first time, coalition soldiers are suffering more deaths in Afghanistan than Iraq - 136 compared to 134 since May.

That is despite a force, which is only a fifth the size of the 160,000 stationed in Iraq.

The figures will make grim reading for British parents whose sons and daughters have been sent to the flashpoint Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, where deaths have rocketed since 2006.

The report's author Professor Sheila Bird said: "The normal fatality rate for men aged between 16 to 24 in Britain is one per 1,000. If you are a soldier in Afghanistan, you are eight times more likely to die than if you are at home.

"The statistics prove Afghanistan is consistently more dangerous than Iraq for British servicemen - not just now but even when combat was at its highest in Iraq."

The report also showed the Taliban's hidden roadside bombs are by far the biggest threat to coalition troops. Blasts account for 60 per cent of deaths, with one fatal bomb every three days.

Canada, which has a much smaller force than Britain's 8,000 troops in Helmand, is paying the highest price with 14 deaths per 1,000 servicemen.

Go BIG and NOISY

May God protect ALL good Afghans and ALL soldiers. If we are in Afghanistan to beat the Taliban and Al Q, then get more troops, commandos, SF and armour into the country NOW. And replace corrupt Afghan leaders NOW. It’s been far too long and too many lives lost for us to lose this war.

LOL ah ya think. Hmmm and 49.7% of all statistics are made up.

I’m not try n to make light on the subject but seriously if 8 out of 1000 troops are killed isnt that .08% and if u compare that to the enlistment rate which I am sure is higher I can’t really say that is “Grave danger for our troops”. I can’t say I believe we are doing any real good being out there but if we stop even 1% of deaths caused by terroists wouldn’t that be a just trade?

NATO-British murderers in Afghanistan

Anonymous, at 7.45am you are talking bull. The invasion by Britain and America of the sovereign country of Afghanistan was about the oil pipeline and drugs. Soldiers of whatever country are brainwashed to murder their innocent fellow human beings for the financial benefit of the puppeteers, who are the money controllers of the world. Nothing more and nothing less. The sooner people awaken to that reality the better, and then perhaps we will start the process for a more peaceful world.

While some of what you say is a fact it’s not all about oil, drugs and the huge gas reserves in the region.
Overthrowing the henious Taliban is part of the mission.
A nice stable peaceful puppet government is also the mission!
Somewhere in all this is also human rights infrastructure free trade and a big oil tap!
Poppies are being grown in Mexico so if it was really about drugs why bother Mexico is closer and easier to deal with.

The list goes on and they’re still invading. I believe that you’ll find that UK numbers are about to go up a bit, it’s the norm. Not to be the grim reaper or anything like that and statistics say that Pak is in more trouble than Afghnistan, the enemy is chaos. Do I still support the peace process, of course. Someone finally woke up to someone down there has been designed to fight the UK and US and they are freaking the UK out. Hummmmmmmm?
