World Buddhist forum to be held next year
The Asia News.Net Sunday 23rd November, 2008 (IANS)
Nanjing, Nov 23 (Xinhua) Buddhist monks and scholars from around the world will gather at a forum in China in March next year to discuss how Buddhism can contribute to the building of a harmonious world, organizers said Sunday.
The second World Buddhist Forum is to be held in Wuxi city in east China's Jiangsu province March 28, 2009.
The meeting will then move to Taipei in Taiwan, and close there April 1, Buddhist Master Xuecheng said at a press conference in Wuxi.
He said Buddhist monks and scholars from more than 20 countries, including India, the US, Britain, Sri Lanka and Thailand, had expressed their intention to attend the forum.
Xuecheng, vice-president of the Buddhist Association of China, said the event was jointly organized by the association, Buddha's Light International Association, the Hong Kong Buddhist Association, and the China Religious Culture Communication Association.
The forum will focus on the spirit of harmony, regarded as the essence of Buddhist culture, and the role that Buddhism can play in building a harmonious world, he said.
He also expressed the hope that the event would contribute to increased exchanges and understanding among the Buddhists in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The first global Buddhist forum was held in Hangzhou city in east China in April 2006. Statistics published at that time showed around 100 million Chinese, or one in every 13, are followers of Buddhism.
Buddhism was introduced into China by Indian missionaries over 2,000 years ago.

World Buddhist forum to be held next year
Hopefully the 2nd World Buddhist Forum will be more representative than the 1st Forum and not merely a hostage to PRC foreign policy.
If the Forum is to be taken seriously, internationally renowned Buddhist leaders like HH the Dalai Lama should be invited. “Harmonious society” is the slogan PRC’s president has advanced for his country. Now to turn attention away from the ongoing crackdown on Tibetan monasteries, etc. and to be more inclusive, the slogan has been changed to “harmonious world”.
Buddhism is more than just public relations and diplomacy. Buddhism deals with overcoming root causes of human suffering and with developing compassion and wisdom.

Buddhism in China
Good to see renewed interest in Buddhism in the Chinese governmental circle now. This reflects the increasing reverence the religion has among the ordinary Chinese.
I agree with Dharmasurya. China should not politicise the issue. If the Chinese government is serious then no Buddhist conference of this nature can be possible without the participation of the Dalai Lama.

religion without border
If Buddhism is a religion that warrants world attention, then it should not be restricted by any border - Tibet or not. BRINGING UP the Dalai Lama or Tibet’s political issue is BRINGING DOWN this religion to petty, human bickering level. The Lama is not God, and Tibet does not own this religion. What an insult to limit this religion. People always have a way of ruining a good thing by misquoting religion, changing the nature of the religion or trying to get free human power out of it......what a joke.
