WASHINGTON DC - Vice Admiral JimMalloy has taken charge of the U.S. 5th Fleet, headquartered in Bahrain, following the apparent suicide of former commander Vice Admiral Scott Stearney earlier this month.

Malloy was nominated by Trump on Thursday, with the nomination announced by Defense Secretary James Mattis.

The Senate at lightning speed confirmed the appointment on the same day as the vice admiral was nominated. In fact, on a voice vote, the stamp of approval was made an hour after the nomination was received.

Vice Adm. Malloy at the time of his nomination was the deputy chief of naval operations for operations, plans, and strategy, at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon in Washington DC.

He has now taken charge of the U.S. 5th Fleet and U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, as well as the Combined Maritime Forces. He arrived at the 5th Fleets Bahrain headquarters last week.

Malloy has experience in the Middle East as the former deputy director of operations for U.S. Central Command; commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, deploying with USSDwight D. Eisenhower(CVN-69) in 2016 to CENTCOM in support of Operation Inherent Resolve; and, more recently, as vice director for operations on the Joint Staff. He is a 1986 U.S. Naval Academy graduate and hasserved in his current Pentagon job since August this year.

His predecessor Vice Admiral Stearney died on 1 December. NCIS and Bahrain investigators have not concluded a cause of death, however it is expected his death will be ruled a suicide.

His body, according to USNI News, arrived in the U.S. on 4 December at Dover Air Force Base in a transfer ceremony overseen by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson, Navy officials confirmed to USNI.

A number of senior military officials joined the family and friends of the vice admiral for the ceremony, including CENTCOM deputy commander Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas Bergeson; Vice Adm. William Lescher, deputy chief of naval operations for integration of capabilities and resources; Naval Intelligence director Vice Adm. Matthew Kohler; and Navy Chief of Chaplains Rear Adm. Brent Scott.
