Dabawenya artisan aims for the universe

DAVAO CITY, December 5 (PIA) - Kathryn "Kay" Fanlo is a noted Dabawenya artisan, her accessory pieces which consist of intricately crafted neckpieces, earrings, bag and scarf accessories have gained acclaim across the city. Her works can be described as a rich fusion of Mindanaoan indigenous influences and contemporary design.

This year, Kay is shooting for the universe as her famed accessories is being worn by current Miss Universe- Philippines Gazini Ganados who will be embarking on a quest to become the fifth Filipina to win the Miss U crown.

The collaboration with Gazini and her team started when Kay attended the ARISE Mindanao fashion show held in October 27 at the Manila Marriot.

The accessories were showcased by beauty queens such as Emma Marie Tiglao- Miss Continental Philippines 2019, Sharifa Akeel-Miss Asia Pacific International 2018, Aya Abesamis- Binibining Pilipinas 2019 first-runner up, Leren Mae Bautista- Miss Globe Philippines 2019, Resham Ramirez Saeed- Miss Supranational Philippines 2019, and Vickie Marie Rushton- Binibining Pilipinas 2019 Top 15.

"When I was lining up to take a picture with Miss Gazini, she noticed the neckpiece I was wearning and asked if she could take a picture of it," Kay recalls.

That admiration for Kay's piece metamorphosed into a collaboration between the beauty queen, Kay and Gazini's stylist Oli Sara.

"I had to ask for Gazini's vision on the artistry and took that as guide in conceptualizing the design of the earrings," Kay refers to the inspiration for the famous watawat design earrings, the Philippine Flag inspired earrings has drawn raves to Kay's unique vision and artistry.

"The "watawat" design is a symbol of peace, unity and pride which is the core essence of the Filipino people," Kay said.

The 2018 Habi Kadayawan hobbyist/artist category winner said that her collaboration with Ms. Gazini Ganados has resulted in an overwhelming reception to her pieces. "We receive a lot of queries and orders, its truly heart warming, we are so grateful to all the people who appreciated our products.

The 37-year old Kay who is a doting mother to two kids, started her craft in high school when her mom, a dressmaker, entrusted her to do the bead work for the gowns her mother made. In college, she did sideline business making and selling beaded necklaces and earrings.

It was in 2011 that she left her job to do full time business, making souvenirs out of polymer clay, which she expanded into doing workshops.

The Habi Kadayawan competition in 2018 made her rediscover the passion for making fashion accessories.

"I am just so happy that the styling team of Gazini incorporated our handmade items from Davao to her official wardrobe," Kay said after seeing her works worn by the country's bet to the 2019 Miss Universe pageant which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on December 8. (PIA/RG Alama)
