BATAC CITY, Jan. 22 (PIA) - The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has recently rated Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) as a 3-Star academic institution, making MMSU the first and so far the only state university in the Philippines to have this academic award.

QS, an international and leading global higher education company, is known internationally for being a pioneer in university rankings.

Operated by QS, the QS Stars™ rating system is an independent compiler of the QS World University Rankings since 2004.

It evaluates universities across a wide range of important performance indicators as set against pre-established international standards. QS Stars shine a light on both the excellence and the diversity of the rated institution.

According to Mee Jay Domingo, the MMSU Director for External Linkages and Partnership, the university is among the 15 schools in the country to have been evaluated through international metrics.

The evaluation based on the QS Stars methodology lasted for about six months wherein a thorough independent data collection and analysis of performance were conducted.

The results showed the ratings of the state university in eight different categories: 5 stars in teaching, 5 stars in employability, 5 stars in academic development, 2 stars in internationalization, 4 stars in facilities, 5 stars in innovation, 4 stars in social responsibility and program strength, and 4 stars in Bachelor of Secondary Education.

Cumulatively, MMSU is given 3 QS star which means the institution is "nationally well-recognized and may have also begun to attract international recognition. This institution maintains a reputable level of research and its graduates are attractive to employers."

With the aim for a stronger international linkage, Domingo continues to look for partner universities as MMSU needs international students and faculty.

"We cannot do this alone. I presented this already to CHED (Commission on Higher Education). They will help us," the external linkages director shared.

Moreover, he regarded this QS rating as a big leap in being recognized as a top university. (AMB/MJTAB/PIA Ilocos Norte)
