NARAYANGANJ, Bangladesh - The people of Narayanganj have elected Awami League nominee Selina Hayat Ivy to lead the city corporation for the third time in one of the most peaceful, participative, and incident-free elections in Bangladesh's history.
According to unofficial results released Sunday night, the AL nominee with the boat symbol trounced her nearest challenger by more than 66,835 votes.
The Returning Officer Mahfuza Akhter announced that Ivy was elected with 159,397 votes, compared to 92,562 votes cast for her nearest rival and independent candidate Taimur Alam Khandaker.
With the victory, Ivy becomes the first female in Bangladesh history to become the mayor of a city corporation for the third time in a row.
Following the declaration of the results, Ivy stated that her election victory was a victory for the people of Narayanganj.
"I will work till my last breath for the people of Narayanganj," she said.
Voting took place at 192 polling stations spread over 27 wards.
Roads in Narayanganj were packed with voters during yesterday's festive election. Queues began to emerge at polling places as early as 8 a.m.
Many people stated that they had never witnessed a more peaceful election in their lives.
